Production: Educating Rita

Wednesday 14th September - Satuday 17th September 2016
Production: Educating Rita

Rita is a twenty-something Liverpudlian hairdresser with a hunger for knowledge. Frank is her Open University tutor, a cynical failed poet who hides the whisky behind the Dickens. Captivated by her honest and enthusiastic approach to Chekhov, Eliot and Lawrence, Frank finds his love of teaching returning.

Educating Rita is a hilarious comedy about the clash of two sections of society that is as relevant today as when it was originally commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1980. Although it is a small intimate play, it tells a story of big ideas, ideas close to Willy Russell's heart. Despite the humour in the writing, it is also a serious play, about class and choice.

"I wanted to make a play which engaged and was relevant to those who considered themselves uneducated, those whose daily language is not the language of the university or the theatre. I wanted to write a play which would attract, and be as valid for, the Ritas in the audience as the Franks." Willy Russell.
